WAFX and WNOR Sponsor Polar Plunge and Winter Festival for Special Olympics Virginia

WAFX and WNOR were the exclusive radio sponsors of the Annual Polar Plunge and Winter Festival, which happened this past weekend. The largest fundraiser for Special Olympics Virginia, the 2-day event raised $1.55 million (and counting!). 2,664 people plunged into the frigid Atlantic ocean Saturday afternoon, with thousands more on the beach cheering them on! This was the event’s twelfth million-dollar year. Rock Girl Autumn from FM99 and Dave Taylor from 106.9 The Fox were at the event and were part of Special Olympics Virginia’s announcements and check presentation. In addition, former Rock Girl Jordan also participated, taking the plunge in Autumn’s place due to a recent injury.

“Following our athletes’ lead, Special Olympics Virginia strives to create communities where all are welcomed, all are respected, all are included, and all are valued. Our Polar Plunge is a prime example of what we can do when we work together toward those goals,” said David Thomason, Special Olympics Virginia President.

General Manager Carol Commander: “It’s our honor to be a part of such a significant and important fundraising event for the Special Olympics. To witness thousands of people jumping into the ocean on a beautiful, but very chilly, February morning for such a great cause – well, it doesn’t get better than that!”

WNOR and WAFX promoted the event with contests for plunge entries, PSA’s (both recorded and done live by jocks), Social Media, eblasts, and our websites.
