Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and FM99 WNOR staff celebrate a successful Mayflower Marathon!
1,007,000 meals (and counting) will be served thanks to donations made at the FM99 & 106.9 The Fox 29th Annual Mayflower Marathon Food Drive presented by Bud’s Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning, and Electric.
The annual food drive took place simultaneously at five locations from 5:30am on Friday, 11/21 until 3pm on Sunday, 11/23. On the southside, the locations were Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach and Kroger in North Suffolk. On the peninsula, donations were collected at Kroger at Coliseum Central in Hampton and Kroger in Tabb. And in North Carolina, there was a donation location at the Moyock Welcome Center.
All food and monetary donations collected in Virginia Beach and Suffolk went to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. All donations made at the Hampton and Tabb locations went to the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. All donations collected at the Moyock Welcome Center benefit the Foodbank of the Albemarle.
Carol Commander, General Manager of Hampton Roads Media Group (WNOR and WAFX): “The need has never been greater, and we are deeply grateful to our incredible community for stepping up. It’s been inspiring to witness such an outpouring of generosity from so many friends and neighbors—THANK YOU! Thanks to your support, the shelves at local foodbanks are now overflowing. Together, the FM99 and 106.9 The Fox 29th Annual Mayflower Marathon will provide more than 1,007,000 meals.”
“Year after year, the FM99 and 106.9 The Fox Mayflower Marathon shows what this community can accomplish together,” said Christopher Tan, President and CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. “As many families continue to feel the strain of rising costs and limited resources, the generosity we saw this weekend ensures thousands will have what they need for a Thanksgiving meal. We’re deeply grateful to every donor, volunteer, and partner who made this possible, and especially to FM99 and 106.9 The Fox for continuing to power this tradition.”
“For 29 years, our neighbors continue to show up when the community calls, ensuring that everyone on the Peninsula can share a delicious meal with their loved ones during the holidays,” said Bob Latvis, President & CEO of the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. “We know many of our neighbors are facing a difficult season. The Foodbank never works alone, and community partnerships and food drives like the Mayflower Marathon provide essential nourishment and peace of mind to those of us experiencing food insecurity.”
“This is our third year participating in the Mayflower Marathon Food Drive, and the donations this year exceeded expectations. Thank you to 106.9 The Fox and FM99 for holding this great event, and to everyone who came by the Moyock Welcome Center to donate to the Food Bank of the Albemarle this weekend. We collected enough funds and food to distribute more than 27,000 meals at our food bank and this comes at a critical time when food insecurity is higher than ever. We believe that everyone should have access to nutritious food all year, and you can continue to make that happen by donating, advocating, and volunteering with the Food Bank,” said Brian Gray, Director of Communications, Food Bank of the Albemarle.
