Greater Lafayette Community Raises More Than $50,000 at 2026 Purdue Polar Plunge Benefiting Special Olympics Indiana

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Nearly 100 brave participants took the icy plunge at the 2026 Purdue Polar Plunge on February 28 at Lambert Fieldhouse, raising more than $50,000 to support Special Olympics Indiana and its mission of providing year-round sports training and competition opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

The annual fundraising event brought together supporters for a day of fun and excitement. Among those taking the plunge was Purdue Pete, who joined participants in showing support for the more than 19,000 Special Olympics Indiana athletes who benefit from programs across the state.

The funds raised through the event will help ensure athletes continue to have access to sports training, competition, health initiatives, leadership programs, and inclusive opportunities that build confidence and foster community.

“Lafayette Media Group is proud to support events that make a meaningful impact in our community,” said Lafayette Media Group General Manager Mike Shamus. “The enthusiasm shown by participants and supporters at this year’s Purdue Polar Plunge demonstrates the incredible commitment our community has to Special Olympics Indiana and its athletes.”

Lafayette Media Group served as a local media sponsor for the event, helping raise awareness and encourage community participation. WASK-FM’s Bryan “Mac” McGarvey kept the energy high throughout the day as the event’s emcee, engaging participants and spectators while celebrating the fundraising achievements of teams and individuals.

FM99/106.9 The Fox Polar Plunge Team contributed to the $1.7M raised at the Polar Plunge

FM99 Afternoon Drive personality Nick Pearl lost a bet with FM99 Rock Girl Suvanna, but they are both winners for helping Special Olympics Virginia.

Nick, Suvanna, and Dave Taylor from sister station 106.9 The Fox created the FM99/106.9 The Fox Polar Plunge Team powered by Acoustical Sheetmetal Company. All 3 participated in the Polar Plunge at the Virginia Beach oceanfront on February 8, along with staff from Acoustical Sheetmetal Company. Their team raised $7,500 for Special Olympics Virginia, contributing to the $1.7 Million raised at the event.

Th bet, dubbed the Hair vs. Hair Challenge, was simple: whomever raised the LEAST amount for the Polar Plunge had to shave their head. WTKR, the TV sponsor of the Polar Plunge, caught wind of the challenge and invited Nick and Suvanna, along with Adora Davis from Shear Passion, to do the head shaving live on “Coast Live.”

A record-breaking 4,151 Plungers raised $1.7 million for Special Olympics Virginia. Nick and Rock Girl Suvanna are already brainstorming bets for Polar Plunge 2026!
